The revenue pathway: Culture

While every business is different, there are some rules that can be universally applied. In my work as a strategic business coach and consultant at Ferarrio Consulting, I’m often asked where a company needs to focus in order to start driving revenue. There are no quick fixes, but a good first exercise is to consider the nine elements of the revenue pathway. This list highlights routes to revenue growth, from structure and positioning to culture – and all businesses will find things they need to work on within those nine.

To give you a taster, here’s more detail on the one that is the foundation of everything a business does: culture.

What is the ‘culture’ of a business?

Culture isn’t one thing – it is everything. Put simply it is the norms of behaviour in the business, it’s the energy and the way we do things. If you have positive energy, people will be happy to come to work and the talent in that company will grow. Equally, businesses quite often fail because a toxic culture simply drives the good people away. Most of the time, culture just evolves and in many cases, it evolves in a good direction. However, when it evolves in a not-so-good direction this is where you need to put the work in. We often talk with our clients about building an ‘Intentional’ culture – taking control and defining what the genuinely good elements of your culture are.

Why culture impacts growth

Culture doesn’t sound like a growth strategy because it’s seen as the ‘touchy feely’ part of a business. Spoiler alert: it most certainly isn’t! Getting the culture right in your business will lead to its growth because if you get it right, you get the energy right. If you get the energy right, then it attracts people to you – both the right employees and the right clients. This is why it’s important to focus on the culture of your business and if you actively create a positive culture, then the foundation of your business is laid. Never underestimate the value of culture when it comes to growth!
